Situational awareness

This post is written in the Washington D.C. area where I am attending an ISO meeting next week. As Sunday evening approaches, people on the US east coast are bracing themselves for the anticipated impact of the oncoming storm – hurricane Sandy.

In this age of the Information society, people have access to information feeds that enable them to have quite detailed situational awareness, regardless their personal or professional circumstances. This makes it possible for them to take precautionary action and to be agile in their handling of the situation as it unfolds.

We may not yet possess the means required to influence or control the forces of nature, but we can use our intelligence, meaning both our cognitive capabilities and our contextual knowledge, to parry that which threatens us. Improved situational awareness makes for better and faster decision-making, providing improved chances of survival or success for both individuals and enterprises.

Ciao, Johan
